Mentalisieren

A mother reads to a child lying in bed in a decorated bedroom

Logline

Short educational films about everyday situations at school that call for mentalizing. They offer no ready-made solutions but invite reflection and discussion.

Synopsis

Mented is a series of six short educational films made for MentEd, an Erasmus+ project led by the Evangelische Hochschule Darmstadt. The project brings the mentalization approach into the training of teachers, social workers and early childhood professionals. Mentalizing means understanding behaviour, our own and that of others, through the thoughts, feelings and needs behind it.

Each film shows an everyday situation from educational practice that calls for mentalizing. Some of these situations go well, others go wrong. The scenes are based on real cases collected from practitioners, supervision and case reflection. The films do not offer a correct solution. They serve as case examples in training groups: participants watch a film together, share first impressions, then watch it again scene by scene and ask what the characters might feel and why they act as they do.
